When to Call Your Doula

One of the most common questions I hear from both new clients and parents just starting to explore doula support is: “When should I call my doula?”

I want you to know that having doula support means having someone by your side before, during, and after labor, ready to guide, encourage, and advocate for you. Here is what this support can look like.

You are never bothering me. My role is to support you—not just when you’re in active labor, but also in those hours or days before, when uncertainty or questions arise. Sometimes a quick text or phone call can bring reassurance, practical tips, or clarity on what to expect next.

Here are some common moments when I encourage you to reach out:

When you think you might be in labor

Whether your contractions are just starting, your water breaks, or you simply feel different and wonder if “this is it,” I’m here to listen. We’ll talk through your symptoms, timing, and what to expect so you can feel grounded and prepared.

When your contractions change

If they get stronger, longer, or closer together, letting me know helps us plan the best time for me to come support you in person. That way, you’re never alone as your labor builds.

If your water breaks

Even if contractions haven’t started, please reach out. We’ll discuss what happened and when you should contact your healthcare provider.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure

Labor brings so many emotions. If anxiety, discomfort, or questions arise, I’m here to help you reconnect with your breathing, your coping tools, or simply offer a calm presence. Sometimes a quick chat can make all the difference.

If your provider recommends a change in your birth plan

Unexpected changes or interventions can feel scary. I’ll help you understand your options and empower you to make decisions that honor your wishes.

After your baby arrives

My support continues beyond birth. Whether you have questions about recovery, newborn care, or just need encouragement, I’m a call away.

Thinking about hiring a doula?

If you want personalized, continuous support tailored to your unique birth journey—whether you’re planning a natural birth, preparing for a hospital stay, or hoping to feel more confident in any outcome—I’d love to talk. You’re invited to reach out anytime for a free consultation to see how I can walk alongside you.

Remember, there’s no “too early” to connect. My goal is to help you feel confident, informed, and cared for every step of the way.
